  • 2016 25th Annual Richard C. Troutman MD DSC (HON) Prize: Dr. Sabine Kling

Dr. Sabine Kling is a postdoctoral researcher at the Laboratory of Ocular Cell Biology at the University of Zurich, Switzerland. She applies physical techniques to address scientific ophthalmic questions. Currently, Dr. Kling investigates the working principle of corneal cross-linking and evaluates methods to increase its efficacy. She also develops numerical models to better predict the outcome of refractive surgeries and analyzes molecular mechanisms determining the biomechanical properties of the cornea.

Dr. Kling completed her pre-doctoral studies at the Institute of Optics at the Spanish Council for Scientific Research in Madrid on the topic "Corneal Biomechanics; Measurement, Modification and Simulation". At the age of 27, she received her PhD in Visual Science with honors from the University of Valladolid, Spain. She also holds a Dipl-Ing(FH) degree in Physical Engineering and a MSc degree in Visual Science. Dr. Kling has performed international short stays at different sites, including the Wellman Center for Photomedicine at the University of Harvard, the Institute of Vision at the University of Heraklion and the Institute of Refractive and Ophthalmic Surgery in Zurich. She has worked with OCT and Scheimpflug imaging systems, air-puff tonometry, Brillouin microscopy, stress-strain extensometry, Zernike polynomials and finite element software.

Dr. Kling is the author of 17 original scientific articles in peer-reviewed jouranls and 38 book chapters, papers, and presentations. Her work has been cited more than 364 times with an h-index of 9.
