    The ISRS Externship

Increase your understanding of new technology and techniques by working alongside experienced surgeons in the ISRS Externship Program. Broaden your perspective through this mutually beneficial collaboration.

Externships will last between two weeks and three months, and take place in Asia, Europe, Latin America, Africa and the Middle East. Stipends will be made available to help cover approved expenses (such as airfare, transportation, lodging, meals).

Apply to be an ISRS Extern

Ophthalmologists who practice in Africa, Asia, Europe, Latin America and the Middle East can apply for the ISRS Externship Program, sponsored in part by Alcon, Johnson & Johnson Vision and Lansier.

    1. Join ISRS to be eligible to apply.
    2. Apply for the externship.

    Become an Externship Host

If you are interested in hosting an ISRS observer, apply to be an externship host. Hosts must be ISRS members located in Africa, Asia, Europe, Latin America and the Middle East.

The externship should focus on educational content, free from commercial influence or bias.

    Review Externs' Case Reports

After completing their externship, ISRS observers are required to submit a case report that highlights what they learned during their time abroad.

    Forward this Opportunity

Let your colleagues know about the ISRS Externship Program. Candidates must be ISRS members to participate. If someone is not currently a member, they can join ISRS online.

  • Testimonials

"I had the privilege of learning first-hand from Professor Alio for an entire month at the Vissum Institute of Ophthalmology, Alicante, Spain.

During my stay, I participated in several research projects, academic activities, cutting-edge surgeries performed nowhere else and was exposed to a wide variety of anterior segment pathologies. Last but definitely not least, I met many amazing people throughout the stay.

I highly recommend registering as an ISRS member and that all young ophthalmologists apply for the amazing externship program that they are funding."

    --Dr. Michael Mimouni

  • "The externship really changed my everyday practice! This is what I tell candidates from around the world who ask for advice before the externship — you are going to have a once in a lifetime experience!"

    --Dr. Yishay Weill
