• Amniotic fluid-derived ointment (AFO) - management of severe gimbal stem cell deficiency (LSCD): contralateral-eye comparison with autologous- serum (AS) Description: Safety and efficacy of AFO vs. autologous-serum(AS) in LSCD, is demonstrated. This prospective, randomized contralateral eye study included 14 eyes of 7 patients with LSCD treated with either AFO (Group A) or AS (Group B). UDVA, CDVA, topography, tomography and epithelial mapping with OCT were monitored for up to 12 months. Mean value changes for A and B respectively: UDVA 20/80 to 20/40 vs. 20/80 to 20/50, CDVA 20/40 to 20/20 vs 20/40 to 20/25, epithelial thickness std: 7um to 1.5um vs. 7 um to 3um. All values showed superiority with AFO treatement. Amniotic fluid-derived ointment may offer an safe and effective alternative in the management of LCSD.
